Digital Realty Launches 6.4MW Nairobi Data Centre

Digital Realty has launched a 6.4MW data centre in Nairobi, strengthening Kenya’s position as a key digital infrastructure market in East Africa.

The launch comes as demand grows for local hosting, cloud connectivity and enterprise-grade infrastructure across the region. Nairobi already plays an important role in East Africa’s technology ecosystem, with a concentration of startups, financial institutions, development organisations, telecoms and regional headquarters.

For AI adoption, the facility is part of the enabling layer. Most AI discussions focus on models, apps and user-facing tools, but those systems depend on data centres, connectivity and reliable power. As workloads become more data-intensive, local infrastructure can reduce latency, improve resilience and support organisations that need clearer control over where data is processed.

The 6.4MW capacity also signals that global infrastructure providers see East Africa as a market where demand is maturing. Data-centre investment often follows enterprise digitisation, cloud migration and regulatory pressure around data protection. Kenya has all three.

Still, capacity is only one part of the equation. The broader impact will depend on pricing, interconnection options, cloud availability, energy sourcing and whether local companies can access the infrastructure in ways that support innovation rather than only large enterprise deployments.

For Kenya, the launch reinforces a larger trend: AI readiness is being built not only in labs and training programmes, but also in the physical infrastructure that allows digital services to scale.
