FATE Foundation and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences have launched the Africa AI Upskilling Programme, a three-year, $4 million Google.org-funded initiative that will train roughly 30,000 university students across Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa using a localized Google DeepMind AI curriculum.

Launch and Structure

The programme launched on August 10, 2026, at the University of Lagos. It uses a train-the-trainer model: over 292 university lecturers and teaching assistants, designated 'AI Champions,' are being trained to deliver a localized version of the Google DeepMind AI Research Foundations curriculum, an eight-course sequence, to penultimate and final-year STEM students at more than 30 higher-education institutions across the four countries.

Scale and Country Breakdown

Nigeria carries the largest allocation, with 11,836 students, 50 AI Champions, and 50 teaching assistants across 10 universities. The programme is run in partnership with Google.org, which provided the $4 million grant, and Nigeria's 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative. The full rollout is expected to reach roughly 30,000 students by the time the three-year programme concludes in 2029.

Why it matters

Most AI skilling efforts on the continent to date have been short workshops or bootcamps aimed at making people competent AI tool-users. The Africa AI Upskilling Programme is a comparatively rare multi-year, multi-country investment aimed instead at producing AI creators and researchers, embedding AI research training directly into university STEM curricula rather than treating it as an extracurricular add-on.
