Senegal Launches 'Senegal AI Factory' to Anchor National AI Ecosystem

Senegal has launched the "Senegal AI Factory," a national initiative intended to serve as a coordinating platform for artificial intelligence research, startup incubation and public-sector adoption of AI tools across the country.

The launch, announced in August 2026, builds on Senegal's existing digital transformation push and its position as one of the first African countries to join the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI). The initiative is framed by Senegalese officials as part of a broader digital sovereignty strategy, aiming to reduce dependence on foreign AI infrastructure and build homegrown technical capacity.

### Coordinating role across the ecosystem

Rather than functioning as a single research lab, the Senegal AI Factory is designed to link together existing actors — universities, startups, and government digital agencies — under a shared national framework. Officials have pointed to talent development and applied AI projects in sectors such as agriculture and public administration as early priorities.

The launch follows a series of digital-governance moves by Dakar in 2026, including a partnership with the UN Development Programme and the opening of an innovation hub earlier in the year, placing Senegal among the more active West African governments in translating AI policy statements into standing institutions.
