South African Banks Report Enterprise AI Has Moved From Pilot to Scale, CNBC Africa Summit Hears

At the CNBC Africa AI Summit in Johannesburg, Discovery Bank and Nedbank executives detailed enterprise AI deployments delivering measurable results at scale, including over half of Discovery Bank's client interactions now handled by an AI channel and R375 million in AI-driven value at Nedbank.

Bank-by-Bank Results

Discovery Bank CEO Hylton Kallner said more than half of all client interactions now run through the bank's natural-language, in-app AI channel, a migration completed in three to four months that delivered the bank's best-ever client satisfaction scores. Nedbank's Portia Matsena said AI cut fraud-case capture time from 30-40 minutes to two minutes and measured total AI-driven value at R375 million (approximately $20 million), while teller sales conversion rose from 5% to 13% after staff were redeployed into advisory roles.

A PwC Africa survey presented at the summit found 67% of African workers already use AI tools in their jobs. Gauteng provincial officials said the province has attracted R206 billion in AI-linked investment commitments across 90 projects. The summit ran August 27 to September 1, 2026 at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.
