Togo Builds AI Models to Understand Its 50 Local Languages

Togo's government has unveiled an initiative to build the country's first AI language models capable of understanding and generating more than 50 of its national and vernacular languages, aiming to close a gap that leaves most African languages absent from mainstream AI systems.

Twin goals: access and representation

Officials said the project pursues two objectives simultaneously: improving ordinary citizens' access to digital public services in the languages they actually speak, and strengthening the presence of African languages within global AI technologies, which remain overwhelmingly trained on English, French and other high-resource languages.

Embedded in the national AI strategy

The language-model initiative is explicitly framed as an expression of Togo's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which officials describe as intended to let the country shape how AI serves its citizens rather than simply adopting technology built elsewhere. The Ministry of Digital Economy has highlighted education, health, agriculture and social protection as priority areas that stand to benefit most from AI tools that work natively in local languages rather than requiring French or English fluency.
