World Bank and Gates Foundation Launch Chichewa AI Initiative in Malawi

The World Bank, with support from the Gates Foundation, launched an initiative to develop AI models capable of understanding and processing Chichewa, aiming to expand access to digital services in local languages.

The project, known as the Malawi Low Resource Language Data Trust Initiative, is intended to break long-standing language barriers by enabling AI-powered systems to deliver information and services in Chichewa, particularly benefiting Malawi.
