Burundian officials validated the country's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy during a workshop held April 21-22, 2026, in a process that brought together government ministries, academic institutions, and development partners.
The strategy sets out Burundi's initial framework for AI governance, covering areas such as data protection, digital infrastructure needs, and sector priorities for early AI adoption, including agriculture and public administration.
Officials described the validation as a foundational step, with implementation to follow in phases as the government works to secure technical and financial partnerships to support the strategy's rollout.
The move places Burundi among East African nations formalizing national AI policy frameworks as regional interest in AI governance accelerates.
