Gambia Warns AI Must Not Replace Journalistic Judgment at Beijing Media Forum
Information Minister Ismaila Ceesay told the Seventh Forum on China-Africa Media Cooperation that AI should remain a tool in service of journalism, not a substitute for editorial responsibility.

The Gambia's Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Ismaila Ceesay, addressed the Seventh Forum on China-Africa Media Cooperation in Beijing, held August 19-21, 2026, under the theme "Share Development Opportunities, Shape the Audio-Visual Future."
Ceesay cautioned that "AI must remain a tool in the service of journalism, not a substitute for journalistic judgment, editorial responsibility or human accountability," while acknowledging that AI could improve research, translation, production, accessibility and audience engagement in newsrooms.
The forum, co-hosted by China's National Radio and Television Administration, the Beijing municipal government and the African Union of Broadcasting, attracted about 400 delegates from China and 45 African nations, including government broadcasting regulators, media outlets and university think tanks. Ceesay's remarks followed The Gambia's own domestic push earlier in 2026 to train journalists on AI-driven misinformation detection ahead of the AUB General Assembly in Banjul.
