Gambia Trains 60 Journalists on AI as African Union Broadcasting Assembly Convenes in Banjul
The Ministry of Information partnered with the African Union of Broadcasting to train 60 Gambian journalists on AI-driven fake news detection and deepfake identification in April 2026.

The Gambia's Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, in partnership with the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB), launched a two-day capacity-building programme on artificial intelligence for Gambian journalists, held April 13-16, 2026, alongside the AUB's 17th General Assembly in Banjul.
The training, themed "Artificial Intelligence in Media Content" and held at the National Nutrition Agency conference hall, was designed to equip Gambian media professionals with skills for ethical, innovative and future-ready journalism. Over the two days, 60 Gambian journalists were trained by international experts from Cameroon, China and The Gambia.
Sessions focused on how AI is reshaping the media landscape, particularly in fake news detection, deepfake identification and the verification of synthetic content. Organisers cautioned journalists about risks associated with AI, including misinformation and manipulated content, stressing the importance of building local capacity to detect and verify false information ahead of Gambia's 2026 elections.
