Lesotho's government used its national AI strategy process to call for affordable connectivity, reliable energy access and stronger digital foundations, arguing these are prerequisites for the country to bridge growing AI-driven divides rather than fall further behind them.
The call came as part of the same Maseru-based engagement in August 2026 that produced Lesotho's National AI Strategy and Data Centre Blueprint Workshop, with government officials framing digital infrastructure gaps as the primary obstacle standing between Lesotho and equitable participation in the AI economy.
Officials tied the message directly to the workshop's broader goals: that Lesotho's AI ambitions cannot be separated from more basic infrastructure questions, including grid reliability and last-mile internet access, particularly in rural highland communities away from Maseru.
The framing positions Lesotho's AI strategy as inseparable from its wider digital-infrastructure and energy-access agenda, a link the government said would shape how the eventual national strategy prioritizes investment.
