Lesotho Opens National AI Strategy and Data Centre Blueprint Workshop in Maseru
A five-day workshop convened by Lesotho's Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation with the United Nations kicked off the country's first National AI Strategy and Data Centre Blueprint.

Lesotho's Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI), working with the United Nations in Lesotho, opened a five-day National AI Strategy and Data Centre Blueprint Workshop in Maseru on August 17, 2026.
Deputy Prime Minister Justice Nthomeng Majara delivered the keynote address, calling for a cautious and strategic approach to AI development. She stressed the importance of assessing Lesotho's existing capabilities and establishing the necessary safeguards, infrastructure, policies and human capacity before scaling AI investments.
The workshop was facilitated by the United Nations Office of Digital and Emerging Technologies (UN ODET), partner UN agencies, and experts from the UN-supported AI Capacity Development Network (CDN). It is intended to produce a National AI Strategy providing a framework for the responsible and strategic deployment of AI in Lesotho, alongside a Data Centre Blueprint to guide the development of secure, resilient and sustainable digital infrastructure.
The initiative places Lesotho among a small but growing number of Southern African countries formally drafting national AI governance frameworks in 2026, with UN technical support underpinning the process from the outset.
