Republic of Congo Launches National AI Strategy Technical Committee

The Republic of Congo's Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and the Digital Economy launched a technical committee on 6 May 2026 in Brazzaville to draft the country's first national artificial intelligence strategy, backed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The committee has been tasked with producing 11 deliverables across three phases, building toward a strategy horizon stretching to 2030. Organisers put the budget for the drafting process at between 150 million and 200 million CFA francs (roughly $250,000-$330,000), funded jointly by the Congolese government and UNDP.

The initiative places Congo-Brazzaville among a growing list of Central African states moving to formalise national AI governance, following similar strategy efforts elsewhere on the continent. Officials framed the committee's work as a foundation for later decisions on data governance, digital infrastructure investment, and AI adoption across the public sector.

The technical committee's first phase focuses on stocktaking Congo's existing digital infrastructure and skills base, ahead of drafting policy recommendations in later phases. No public timeline has yet been given for when a completed strategy document will be presented to the Council of Ministers.
