Malawi Validates AI Readiness Assessment Report Ahead of National Strategy

Government officials, researchers, and industry representatives gathered in Lilongwe on July 24, 2026, to validate Malawi's AI Readiness Assessment Report, a foundational document intended to guide the country's eventual national artificial intelligence strategy.

The validation workshop reviewed findings on Malawi's existing digital infrastructure, technical skills base, and regulatory gaps, following an assessment process consistent with those conducted by regional peers including Namibia, Botswana, and Mozambique. Malawi's assessment identified persistent barriers to AI adoption, including limited broadband penetration outside urban centers, a shortage of AI-specific technical training programs, and the absence of a dedicated data protection framework tailored to AI use cases.

The report's validation is a procedural but consequential step: it formally signs off on the evidence base that will underpin Malawi's forthcoming national AI strategy, ensuring the strategy is grounded in an accurate picture of the country's current capacity rather than assumptions drawn from better-resourced markets. Workshop participants included representatives from Malawi's Ministry of Information and Digitalisation, academic institutions, and development partners who supported the assessment process.

Malawi's AI policy development has moved in step with a broader Southern African trend, in which national AI readiness assessments — often conducted with UNESCO or similar international support — precede formal strategy drafting. The approach is intended to avoid strategies that overpromise on infrastructure or skills the country does not yet have in place.
