AfDB Partners Launch Free AI Training For African Public Officials

The African Development Bank Group has partnered with the UNDP AI Hub for Sustainable Development, Google and Apolitical to launch free artificial-intelligence training for public officials across Africa.

The programme will cover AI fundamentals, leadership in government and smarter public procurement. That focus matters because governments are becoming buyers, users and regulators of AI at the same time. Officials may need to evaluate an automated benefits system, procure a language model, manage public data or explain a new digital service to citizens.

Many national AI strategies have moved faster than the people responsible for implementation. Free, self-paced training can give civil servants a shared baseline for understanding where AI may improve services, where it creates risk and what safeguards should be in place before deployment.

The programme will not solve the continent’s skills challenge alone. Institutions still need reliable data, procurement standards, cybersecurity capacity and teams able to test systems after launch. But a common foundation can reduce the risk of every agency learning the same lessons separately.

For Africa, this is a shift from discussing AI readiness in the abstract to building the people who must turn policy into practice. The long-term test will be whether trained officials use that knowledge to improve services, protect rights and make more disciplined technology decisions.
