Chadian officials met with representatives of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in N'Djamena from May 13-21, 2026, to advance work on a National Data Governance Strategy, a foundational framework intended to underpin future AI and digital-economy policy.
The engagement focused on data-protection principles, cross-border data-flow considerations, and institutional capacity for managing public data, laying groundwork the government says is necessary before broader AI systems can be responsibly deployed at scale.
UNECA's involvement reflects continental efforts to support member states in building data-governance foundations aligned with the African Union's broader digital and AI policy frameworks.
The initiative follows Chad's earlier creation of a Directorate General for Artificial Intelligence, with officials describing data governance as a necessary companion track to the country's institutional AI-readiness efforts.
