Djiboutian officials participated in World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) 2026 discussions held July 6-10, engaging with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Smart Africa alliance on regional digital-cooperation and AI-related initiatives.
The talks covered topics including digital infrastructure investment, AI governance coordination, and Djibouti's role as a connectivity hub given its position along major undersea cable routes linking Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
Djibouti's engagement with Smart Africa, a continental initiative promoting harmonized digital policy across member states, reflects the country's effort to align its emerging national AI strategy with broader continental frameworks.
The WSIS discussions came roughly six months after Djibouti began formal work on its national AI strategy, indicating continued momentum on multiple fronts of the country's digital-policy agenda through 2026.
