Djibouti launched work on a national artificial intelligence strategy in January 2026 with technical support from the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA) and UNESCO, placing the effort within the country's long-term Vision Djibouti 2035 development framework.
The initiative aims to establish governance principles, priority sectors, and capacity-building pathways for AI adoption, with officials framing artificial intelligence as a tool for advancing Djibouti's ambitions to become a regional logistics, finance, and digital hub.
International partners are providing technical guidance on policy design, drawing on frameworks developed for other countries in the region, while Djiboutian officials lead consultations with domestic stakeholders across government and the private sector.
The strategy work marks Djibouti's first structured national approach to AI governance, setting the stage for further policy development throughout 2026.
