UN Trains 140 Nigerien Officials in AI for Human Security Under ILLIMI Niger Project

The UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Niger officially launched AI training applied to human security on June 9, 2026, in Niamey, as part of the implementation of the ILLIMI Niger project.

The capacity-building session ran for about ten days and was led by an international expert. It involved 140 officials from various national institutions, aiming to strengthen data-exploitation skills, improve crisis prevention and management, and consolidate collaboration between national institutions and UN agencies.

Organizers described it as the first initiative of this scale in Niger, marking a significant step in building a national digital-skills ecosystem in service of sustainable development, crisis prevention and resilience.

The training represents Niger's most substantial dedicated AI capacity-building effort of 2026 to date, distinct from the geospatial-focused SIATeG programme, with its explicit focus on applying AI tools to human-security and crisis-management functions across government institutions.
