Mauritania Launches National AI Strategy at Nouakchott AI Build Hackathon
Mauritania unveiled its National AI Strategy at the first edition of the Nouakchott AI Build hackathon, an event created to promote digital innovation and sustainable development.

Mauritania's National AI Strategy was launched during the first edition of the Nouakchott AI Build hackathon, held on May 17, 2026, marking a major step in the country's digital transformation efforts.
The hackathon was initiated by Abdellahi Ould Moustapha, an AI specialist and graduate of Nouakchott's École Polytechnique Supérieure, and was designed to promote digital innovation and sustainable development among Mauritania's emerging technology community.
The strategy launch builds on earlier planning work, including a National AI Strategy document covering 2024-2029 developed under the Ministry of Digital Transformation, Innovation and Modernization of Administration, with the Nouakchott AI Build event serving as the public unveiling moment for the initiative in 2026.
Pairing the strategy's launch with a hackathon aimed at students and young technologists reflects an effort by Mauritanian officials to root the national AI agenda directly in the country's homegrown technical talent rather than treating it purely as a top-down government policy exercise.
